Charlotte Sörensen is Living the Dream

Blois, September 12th, 2024

Joy on her face, and also a bit of disbelief. Charlotte Sörensen from Denmark is the 2024 women’s world champion after she beat Therese Klompenhouwer in a high-class final: 30-29 in 27/26. The Dutch woman, five times world champion already, was the big favourite. But Sörensen showed in the final how much she has grown in a short few years. A pupil of Tony Carlsen, she is the real deal and she has not peaked yet.

Nhi Hoangyen Nguyen was the surprise semifinalist from Vietnam, but she was overpowered by Sörensen: 30-15 in 32/31. It is obvious though, that Vietnam will join Korea in the march for women’s 3-cushion. Asia has what Europe so desperately wants: younger players.

In the other, fully Dutch semi, Karina Jetten kept up beautifully with Klompenhouwer, but Therese had the sharp finish: 30-22 in 21. Just last week, it was Jetten with a surprise win over Klompenhouwer in the Predator Grand Prix Ladies, this week their usual order was restored.

The final was a match where dominance flipped from one player to the other: Klompenhouwer had a 14-6 lead but Sörensen ran 8. Later in the match, Sörensen was ahead 28-18 but then Klompenhouwer ran 8! It was easily one of the best ladies finals we have seen, and Sörensen’s match point was far from easy, an exclamation point on her tournament.

Charlotte Sörensen wins the 10.000 Euro first prize and a ticket for the World Games in China next year.
