Georgiou Secures Medal for Cyprus in Thrilling Win Over Xiaolong Liang
Michael Georgiou of Cyprus has secured a medal for his country after a gripping 4-3 victory over China’s Xiaolong Liang in a match that lasted nearly three hours. The 2023 IBSF World 6-Red Champion fought back from a narrow loss in the first frame to claim the decisive win.
Georgiou, who lost the opening frame 44-54, quickly regained his composure and took control of the match, posting three impressive consecutive breaks of 60, 54, and 64 to lead 3-1. At this point, it seemed as though a victory was within his reach.
However, Xiaolong Liang wasn’t ready to give up. He mounted a strong comeback, winning the fifth frame with a solid 82-34 scoreline, before delivering a stunning century break of 116 to level the match at 3-3 and force a decider.
The final frame was a tense battle of safety, with both players carefully calculating each shot. Xiaolong made an early break, but after reaching 39, he missed a cross-cut red pot, opening the door for Georgiou. Taking full advantage, Georgiou gained a lead with steady play, but both players continued to trade safety shots, knowing that one mistake could cost them the match.
With the score at 64-40 in Georgiou’s favour, the tension mounted. A crucial moment came when Xiaolong attempted a safety shot but fouled on the black ball, leaving Georgiou with a clear chance. Georgiou potted the blue to strengthen his position, and in a final twist, Xiaolong inadvertently potted the pink while attempting another safety shot. A handshake followed, with Xiaolong congratulating Georgiou on his hard-earned victory.
